How does someone make a spreadsheet program show dollar amounts with two decimal positions?

After importing a CSV file into Microsoft Excel, for each amount column containing dollars and cents, select the entire column, right click a cell and select "Cell Format" from the pop up menu, and then set the format to Number with 1,000 separators and 2 decimal positions.  This only affects the way the data is displayed, of course, not the actual cell content.
